Learning outcomes
At the end of the elective MICROSCOPIC EXAMINATION course, students will be able to describe the microscopic features of cells as observed by light microscopy and recognize the morphological characteristics that allow the identification of various human tissues. Students will understand the pathogenesis of morphologic alterations affecting cells and tissues. They will also acquire the knowledge and skills required to recognize the main histologic features of the most important neoplastic diseases, enabling them to assess tumor grade and stage.
Course contents
ALTERATIONS OF CELLS AND TISSUES (Anatomic Pathology) is the second component of the elective course MICROSCOPIC EXAMINATION. The first component is RECOGNITION OF NORMAL MORPHOLOGY (Histology), and the third is HISTOLOGICAL DIAGNOSIS (Anatomic Pathology).
This module aims to introduce students to the recognition and understanding of the major alterations of human cells and tissues associated with pathological processes, including inflammatory responses and neoplastic transformation.
Readings/Bibliography
Robbins and Cotran: Pathologic Basis of Disease (or equivalent textbooks), and histopathology atlases (e.g., Color Atlas of Histopathology by R. C. Curran).
Teaching methods
Sessions will be hands-on with observation and discussion of histopathologic specimens. Depending on the number of students enrolled in the course, students will have the opportunity to examine the specimens either directly under the microscope together with the instructor, or via digital display.

Assessment methods
Students will pass the course based on their ability to recognize the nature of microscopic alterations.
Teaching tools
The sessions of the course will use a multi-head microscope and/or digital slides for examination and discussion with the teacher of histopathologic specimens.
