Learning outcomes
Through this course, and upon completion of the final test, the student gains basic knowledge of mechanics of solids and static analysis of structures made of beams. These skills make the student able to solve basic problems related to the design or assessment of mechanical components.
Course contents
Fundamentals of rigid-body equilibrium: forces, moments and constraints.
External loads acting on components: diagrams and maximum values.
Geometry of areas and masses: first moments and moments of inertia.
Internal stresses in components: diagrams and maximum values.
Mechanical stiffness.
Mechanical properties of materials.
Prediction of component life and fatigue failure.

Teaching methods
The course syllabus is fully covered during the classroom lectures. Exercises are provided to guide students in learning the techniques required to solve simple structural problems.
Assessment methods
Written examination on the topics covered during the lectures. Oral examination (optional). Passing the written examination is a prerequisite for admission to the oral examination.
The written examination lasts 3 hours and consists of three exercises:
- Solution of a statically determinate structure
- Exercise on the geometry of areas and calculation of stresses in a cross-section
- Fatigue assessment of a shaft
A sufficient mark in the first exercise is a necessary condition for passing the examination.
