Learning outcomes

Provide fundamentals of the green and circular economy priorities and their economical, environmental and social implications, in the pharma and cosmetic industries. Basics and industrial implications associated with the products and processes co-design and the integrated valorization of the resulting wastes will be presented, also with the contribution of industrial experts.

Course contents

The main topics covered in the course are:

  1. Green and Circular Economy: fundamentals, significance, and applications.
  2. European policies and Action Plans for the implementation of the Circular Economy and the Bioeconomy: key contents and implications.
  3. Circular Economy in the pharmaceutical and cosmetics industries: current state of implementation, as well as the main challenges and opportunities associated with its adoption.
  4. Eco-design of products, including packaging, optimization of product life cycles, and end-of-life value recovery in the pharmaceutical and cosmetics industries.
  5. Use of secondary and renewable raw materials and improvement of production and product delivery efficiency in the pharmaceutical and cosmetics industries.
  6. Monitoring and improving the circularity of pharmaceutical and cosmetics value chains through Life Cycle Assessment (LCA).

The course also includes seminars delivered by industry experts and may include visits to trade fairs and exhibitions focused on the Circular Economy.

The use of the teaching material provided by the Professor is suggested. It is provided on the "Virtuale" system.

Assessment methods

To be eligible to take the examination, students must have attended at least 70% of the scheduled lectures. Students are also reminded to check the course prerequisites specified in the degree programme regulations.

Students with Specific Learning Disorders (SLD) or with temporary or permanent disabilities are invited to contact the University's dedicated support office as early as possible (https://site.unibo.it/studenti-con-disabilita-e-dsa/en/for-students ) so that appropriate examination accommodations can be arranged. Requests for accommodations must be submitted to the instructor at least 15 days before the examination date. The instructor will assess the suitability of the proposed accommodations in relation to the course learning objectives.

Students' achievement of the intended learning outcomes described above is assessed through a final examination.

The examination consists of an oral assessment based on questions covering the topics addressed during the lectures.

The highest marks will be awarded to students who demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of the course topics, together with the ability to discuss them clearly, critically, and effectively.

To achieve a passing grade, students must demonstrate at least an adequate knowledge of the key concepts of the subject, the ability to apply them critically, and an appropriate use of technical terminology.

A failing grade will be awarded if the student demonstrates significant gaps in the knowledge of the key concepts of the subject or is unable to discuss the topics using appropriate scientific and technical language.

The use of artificial intelligence tools and any other digital device or tool during the examination is strictly prohibited. Any such use constitutes a violation of the University's principles of academic integrity.
