Learning outcomes

At the end of this course the students will know the base contents of Industrial Economics to analyze the behavior of the firm and its effect and interactions on the market. The students will be able to value the strategic interaction among firms and its implications on their behavior. Moreover, they will learn the key concepts of circular economy and environmental sustainability, by considering the path toward the carbon/climate neutrality too, issues with important effects on the firms’ behavior.

Course contents

1. Basic content. Consumers. Firms, market structure, market power. Market failures, externalities and public goods. Pricing strategies and non Pricing strategies.

2. Innovation; process, product and organization. Research and development.

3. Introduction to the Industrial Property: exclusive rights and competition. Patents, trademarks, designs, copyright.

4. Circular economy. Energy and renewable energy sources. Introduction to the eco-innovation, definitions and dimensions. Environmental regulation and eco-innovation. Environmental regulation and effects on competitivity (Porter Hypothesis) and firm location (pollution haven hypothesis).
