Learning outcomes
Upon completion of the course, students will have a basic understanding of the Bulgarian language and culture; they will have achieved written and oral language proficiency that can be applied in communicative situations on familiar, everyday topics (approximately equivalent to Level A1).
Course contents
Communication contents
Greetings and introductions.
Asking and giving information about a person’s background and social position: age, nationality, profession.
Describing an object, a space, a temporal process.
Receiving and giving directions.
Asking and giving times. The calendar and seasons.
Ordering drinks and food at cafes and restaurants.
Shopping.
Phonetics and spelling
The Bulgarian Cyrillic alphabet.
Pronunciation.
Reduction of unstressed vowels.
Rules for alternating voiced and voiceless consonants.
Grammatical contents
The verb “to be” (съм) in the present tense; in the future and past tense.
The verb “to have” (имам/нямам) in the present tense.
Forms of nominative personal pronouns; full and short forms of accusative and dative personal pronouns.
Interrogative and demonstrative pronouns.
Possessive pronouns: full and short forms.
The reflexive pronoun: full and short forms.
Relative pronouns.
Indicative forms of verbs (I, II, III conjugations) in the present and future tense.
The imperative and the negative imperative.
Verb aspect: perfective and imperfective.
Using the perfective and imperfective aspects with some adverbs and conjunctions.
Reflexive verbs.
Nouns: the three genders and the two numbers. The definite article of singular and plural nouns.
Numerical form of masculine nouns.
Formation of verbal nouns with the suffix -не.
Singular and plural adjectives. The definite article of adjectives.
Agreement of adjectives with nouns.
Forming relative adjectives from nouns.
The comparative and superlative degrees of adjectives.
Cardinal and ordinal numerals (from 1 to 10; from 11 to 100; over 100).

Syntax:
Affirmative and negative sentences (use of the particle не).
Interrogative sentences with the particle ли.
Interrogative sentences with interrogative pronouns and adverbs.
Sentences with modal constructions: to want (искам да); to have to (трябва да); to be able to (мога да).
The impersonal use of the form може.
Omission of the subject.

Assessment methods
A final exam consists of a written test (vocabulary and grammar test) and an oral test (conversation on the topics covered in class and exercises). The exam score accounts for 70% of the final grade. 30% of the grade is based on students’ attendance and active participation in the exercises.
