Course contents
The esercitazioni (language practice classes) (36 hours) are aimed, on the one hand, at consolidating and enhancing the student’s language skills and, on the other, at deepening linguistic and discursive aspects of English in the commercial (intercultural communication), legal, and socio-healthcare sectors. Through these classes, students develop practical communicative competence in all skills, both receptive and productive, enabling them to mediate between, produce, and understand languages for specific and specialized purposes (English and Italian).
The practical classes form an integral part of the Mediation English course. For further information, please consult the course webpage of Prof. Mariangela Picciuolo: [https://www.unibo.it/it/studiare/insegnamenti-competenze-trasversali-moocs/insegnamenti/insegnamento/2025/529203 ].

Assessment methods
A written exam based on topics covered during the course is required. The written exam relating to the esercitazioni consists of four questions (in English, to be answered in English): two on intercultural communication (cultural incidents) in a business context, one on medical language, and one on legal issues (the right to medical care and the civil rights of regular and irregular migrants). The use of a monolingual English dictionary (paper format) is permitted. The exam will be handwritten and will last 60 minutes. The grade of the written exam counts for one third of the final grade.
Apart from content, maximum accuracy in lexis and grammar is essential to obtain the highest grade. The paper will be assessed according to the skills required for C2 level of the Common European Framework. An academic writing style is expected. Up to 15 points are awarded for language accuracy and 15 points for content.
Note: If both parts of the course (the final exam of the official course and the esercitazioni) are passed with at least 18/30 each, it is not possible to refuse the grade of a single component and retake it. It will only be possible to refuse the final grade resulting from the average of the two partial exams, in which case both exams (official course and esercitazioni) must be retaken. The grade obtained in a single component remains valid for four exam sessions (including the session in which it was taken).
