Learning outcomes
At the end of the course, the student has a basic knowledge of the Bulgarian language and culture; he/she achieves linguistic competence, both written and oral, applicable in simple communicative situations (approximately corresponding to Level A2).
Course contents
Communication contents
Orientation in tourist situations – visiting different cities and places in Bulgaria. Various tourist activities and entertainment.
Recounting past events.
Describing a person. Relationships between family members.
Visiting the doctor.
Expressing preferences and opinions. Making comparisons.
Phonetics and spelling
Vowel alternation of я/е.
Principles of the mobile ъ.
Grammatical contents
Interrogative, indefinite, and negative pronouns and adverbs.
Collective pronouns.
Relative pronouns and adverbs.
Word order with short forms of personal pronouns.
Full and short forms of possessive pronouns.
Interrogative pronouns for possession.
Reflexive pronouns for possession.
Past perfect (aorist) forms – formation and uses.
Past perfect tense (aorist) of perfective and imperfective verbs.
Compound predicate.
Verbs of motion with various prepositions and adverbs.
Verbs in past indefinite (resultative) tense.
Perfect active participle.
Syntax:
Compound sentences: final and causal subordinate clauses (за да, защото).
Objective subordinate clauses (да, че).
Transforming interrogative sentences with an interrogative pronoun into indirect speech.
Transforming interrogative sentences with the particle ли into indirect speech.

Reduplication of the object.
Transforming imperative sentences into indirect speech.

Assessment methods
A final exam consists of a written test (vocabulary and grammar test) and an oral test (conversation on the topics covered in class and exercises). The exam score accounts for 70% of the final grade. 30% of the grade is based on students' attendance and active participation in the exercises.
