Learning outcomes
Upon completion of the module, the student has gained further knowledge in areas relevant to the orthopedic technician’s professional practice.
Course contents
Module 1 (Prof. Tommaso Tonetti):
- Physiology of neurotransmission: action potentials, saltatory conduction, sodium channels and their functioning.
- Local anesthetics: pharmacodynamics, pharmacokinetics, relationship between structure and function, routes of administration. Main adverse effects of local anesthetics: allergic and non-allergic reactions.
- Systemic toxicity from local anesthetics (LAST): epidemiology, pathophysiological mechanisms, clinical presentation, diagnosis and hints of therapy.
- Principles of analgesia. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.
Anaphylactic shock: pathophysiology, signs and symptoms, initial treatment. - Principles of basic life support with use of automatic defibrillator (BLS-D). Recognition of cardiac arrest. Chain of survival. BLS algorithms. Practical use of the AED.
Module 2 (Prof. Mariacristina Di Marco):
Epidemiology of neoplastic pathologies. Bases of carcinogenesis of tumors. Definition of inheritance and familiarity. Primary, secondary and tertiary prevention. Main classes of cancer drugs and related toxicities. General staging of neoplasms. Definition of chemotherapy therapy, radiotherapy: adjuvant, neoadjuvant and palliative. Breast cancer epidemiology, diagnosis and treatment. Colorectal cancer epidemiology diagnosis and treatment. Tumor of the exocrine pancreas: epidemiology, diagnosis, treatment. Bone tumors: Osteosarcomas, Ewing sarcomas, epidemiology, diagnosis, treatment. Treatment of bone metastases.
Module 4 (Prof. Annio Posar):
- Neurodevelopmental disorders, with particular attention to autism spectrum disorder: definition, clinic, differential diagnosis, etiopathogenesis.
- The concept of intelligence and the tools used to evaluate it.
- Cerebral palsy: clinic, etiopathogenesis, treatment.
- Epilepsy with onset in infancy, childhood, and adolescence: clinic and electroencephalographic features; etiopathogenesis; pharmacological and not pharmacological treatments; the possible neuropsychological impairment in these patients.
Module 5 (Prof. Pierpaolo Palumbo):
- Introduction to the course
- Regulation (EU) 2017/745 on Medical Devices (MDR): definition and classification of medical devices, stakeholders involved, placing on the market and putting into service, general safety and performance requirements, harmonized technical standards, declaration and CE marking of conformity, EUDAMED, clinical investigations, surveillance and vigilance, technical documentation, custom-made medical devices.
- Introduction to reading patents and technical standards
- Operating principles of radiography, fluoroscopy, computed tomography, PET, ultrasound, and magnetic resonance imaging

The course will also be characterized by interactivity with the students, in-progress checks will be carried out, in the form of a question or test to verify the real learning of the students during the lessons, to make any further study on some topics of particular importance and interest for the course of treatment and therapy of the oncological patient, anesthetic, suffering from pain or critic with the need to be resuscitative.

Oral exam, consisting of two questions, aimed at evaluating the achievement of the following educational objectives:
- Knowledge of the main neuropsychiatric disorders of developmental age that were treated in class.
- Knowledge of the general concepts related to the differential diagnosis of neuropsychiatric disorders of developmental age that were treated in class.
Module 5 (Prof. Pierpaolo Palumbo):
Written test with multiple-choice and short-answer questions.
