Teaching methods

LINGUISTICS - Lectures (Prof. Ana Pano Alamán)

Gradual introduction to:

  • the main grammatical categories in relation to their form, function, and meaning in basic syntactic structures (phrases);
  • more complex structures, from sentences to paragraphs. We explore how phrases combine to form simple and compound sentences. We examine their form and their functional and semantic value in different types of sentences;
  • the main topics related to discourse syntax in Spanish linguistics.
  • the concepts of meaning, denotation, and connotation;
  • the relationships between words from a semantic point of view;
  • the literal and figurative meaning (metaphors, metonymies, idiomatic expressions).

The gradual exposure to these topics will be accompanied by summaries of the required texts, examples from written, oral, and multimodal texts that will be analyzed in class, and research and analysis activities on contemporary Spanish corpora.

The required texts listed in the bibliography will be explained in class; the contents of the elective chapter will be briefly described during class, but students are expected to study them autonomously.
