Learning outcomes

The student will be capable of recognizing problems and will be capable of using the strategies of linguistic mediation to solve them. The student will be able to recognize and understand what constitutes in given situations correct linguistic and behavioral activity.

Course contents

Linguistic Mediation (F. Biagini – H. Saturni)

The aim of this module is to teach students how to deal professionally with interlingual and intercultural communicative situations. The simulations of interpreter-mediated exchanges concern mainly touristic contexts, such as travel agencies, stations and airports, hotels, restaurants, medical assistance for tourists, business tourism.

Learning outcomes are reached through sight translation from and into Russian, and listening comprehension, memorizing and rephrasing exercises. Students will play the role of the interpreter in simulations of interpreter-mediated exchanges.

In one of the two weekly lessons a Russian mother tongue teacher will be present in order to allow simulations (20 hours).

Attendance of the lettorato classes associated with Language Mediation between Russian and Italian is mandatory. The topics discussed during the lettorato will be tested during the exam.

Students are also encouraged to participate in the scientific activities and events organized by the Department of Interpreting and Translation and, particularly, the conferences and seminars organized within the various Research laboratories and which are related to the topics addressed by the module.

Teaching methods

Lessons include both theoretical and practical parts. Students are encouraged to participate actively and critically in all the activities. Attendance is mandatory for at least 70% of all lessons.

The Language Mediation module will rely on two main teaching stages aiming at the acquisition of oral translation and intercultural communication techniques. The first one is aimed at presenting new lexicon and culture and language issues. The exercises used in this first part include rephrasing, sight translation from and into Russian, exercises for memory-skill and lexical development, cloze-tests. The second teaching stage consists of simulations of interpreter-mediated exchanges between Russian native speakers and Italian native speakers in the contexts taken into consideration in the theoretical part.

Students needing help in Russian language learning may refer to the tutor. The name of the Russian tutor will be announced shortly.

Assessment methods

Al fine di dimostrare l'acquisizione delle conoscenze e delle abilità attese e l'avvenuto apprendimento delle tecniche di mediazione linguistica, la prova finale del modulo di Mediazione Linguistica tra l'italiano e il russo prevede lo svolgimento di una traduzione a vista da e verso il russo e di una simulazione di mediazione. Durante le lezioni avrà luogo inoltre la verifica continua dell'apprendimento delle nozioni e del lessico specifico di ogni argomento trattato.

Il voto finale del corso integrato di Lingua e Mediazione Russa II viene definito sulla media dei voti riportati nelle prove di “Lingua e Cultura” (I semestre) e “Mediazione Linguistica tra il russo e l'italiano” (II semestre).

In order to assess the acquired and expected knowledge and competence of language mediation techniques, the final exam of tis module will consist of sight translation into and from Russian and a simulation of an interpreter-mediated exchange. Throughout the module and during lessons the acquisition of lexical and theoretical acquisition will be assessed.

The final mark of the integrated course of Russian Language and Mediation II will be the average between the mark obtained for Russian Language and Culture (I semester) and Language Mediation between Russian and Italian (II semester).

Teaching tools

Bilingual and monolingual Dictionaries. Dictionary of synonyms and antonyms. Multimedia tools for comprehension, rephrasing and translation exercises, photocopies.
