Learning outcomes
At the end of the course the student has basic knowledge of mechanics, electromagnetism and the skills needed both to the description and an understanding of living matter in a biomedical context. It is aware of the basic elements of scientific methodology and mathematical language related to it. The student is also aware, at a baseline level, of the physical phenomena that are the basis of the most common clinical and diagnostic tests.
Course contents
Fundamentals of Mathematics
Outline of functions: the Cartesian plane; direct and inverse proportion, polynomial and trigonometric functions. Scalars and vectors: algebraic operations on scalars and vectors (sum, product).
Solid Mechanics
Kinematics: notes on fundamental motions, uniform motion, uniformly accelerated, uniform circular motion and harmonic oscillator. Dynamic: the basics. Conservative forces and potential energy. Work and mechanical energy. Friction and dissipative forces. Static equilibrium point and rigid bodies. Fluids: statics and dynamics. Pascal's principle and buoyancy. Flow, Bernoulli's theorem. Viscosity; Poiseuille's law. Applications to the respiratory and cardiovascular system. Notes on sedimentation. Surface tension, capillarity phenomena. Diffusion and osmotic pressure.
Electromagnetism
Static electric and magnetic fields: forces and potential energy. Magnetic and electrical phenomena in matter: induction, polarization and ionization. Time-varying fields: induced electromotive force.
Waves, modern physics and radiation
Wave: definition, characteristics and examples. The spectrum of the electromagnetic waves: interaction with matter as a function of the frequency. Photons: energy of a photon, and effects at the atomic level. Ionizing radiation: types, property and the main unit of measure.
Biomedical applications
Ultrasound and Eco-Doppler, X-ray and CT scan, magnetic resonance imaging.
