Learning outcomes
The aim of this course is to provide student with an understanding of the evolution of world economy in the last century, giving a particular emphasis to tourism. On completion of the course, the student should be able to analyse the privailing market integration process, the success of new forms of enterprises, the emergence of new patterns of consumption with regard tourism sector. Besides he is expected to understand the factors that permitted products to be successful or to be unsuccessful on the Internationl tourist market in the XIXth and XXth centuries. Finally it should be able to value the impact of economic policies, cultural changes, market integration, forms of enterprises on tourism trends in XIXth and XXth century economy
Course contents
The course is organized in two parts, the first taught by by professor Patrizia Battilani, the second by professor Davide Bagnaresi.
In the first part the student will be offered a general overview of tourism evolution across the XIXth and XXth centuries in a world perspective.
The following topics will be covered
1. The industrial revolution and the forms of enterprises
2. The retail revolution and the emergence of mass
consumption
3. The three waves of globalization
4. Feature and evolution of èlite tourism: the structure of
hospitality, the destination management strategies, the
customers
5. Elite tourism products: spa, seaside, mountain, natural parks,
culture
6. Mass tourism: the structure of hospitality, the destination
management strategies, the customers
7. Mass tourism products: the sunny sea and the white
mountain
8.: the structure of hospitality, the destination management
strategies, the customers
9. Post-modern tourism products: culture, meeting industry,
foodpath
10. The evolution of destination management organizations
In second part the student will be offered a detailed picture of tourism evolution in Italy
The second group of lectures will be given by Davide Bagnaresi
and will cover the following topics
1. World tourism: Europe and the United States.
2. World tourism: Asia and Africa
3. The main Italian economy transformations over the last two
centuries
4. The emergence of èlite tourism in Italy
5. The emergence of mass tourism in Italy
6. The emergence of post-modern tourism in Italy
7. Some case studies: Lido di Venezia, Rimini, Costa Smeralda,
Trentino, San Marino
8. How tourist books have changed over time

Assessment methods
The exam is aimed at evaluating the skills
and the critical abilities developed by the
students
The exam is composed of a written test, with 6 open questions.
It is not possible to bring books, personal notes or electronic devices in the exam. Registration for the exam is compulsory, and students have to register throughAlmaEsami according to the general rules of the School of Economics, Management and Statistics.
The mark is out of 30 points, and the minimum required to pass the exam is 18 / 30.
