Learning outcomes
At the end of the course, student will have knowledge of history and theories of architectural conservation and about their evolution during the two last centuries. In particular, at the end of the course he/she will be able to critically identify the principle of historical building conservation and the effects of their application on the present built environment.
Course contents
Heritage preservation, referred to buildings and architecture, in its modern signification, is a relatively recent field of study, being born in the early nineteenth century. Nevertheless, in little more than two centuries, many theories have followed, creating a very articulated history of the discipline and, in many ways, a fascinating one. The course will attempt to provide the students with the basics of that particular story, trying to connect as closely as possible, when it can be done, the theoretical statements of the leading Actors to their practical outcomes, dealing with theories and ideas, but also with works, projects and technical aspects. The course will be organized also through visits to restored monuments and buildings in which scholar and academics will help us to deeply understand "on the spot" what has been done and how it has be done.
Assessment methods
The exam consists in an interview on the content of the lessons. Works by the student related to case studies, agreed with the professor, will be assessed.
Teaching tools
The course is organized through lectures, visits to monuments and individual and collective checks. During the lectures, we'll discuss some general theoretical topics and illustrate restoration cases, considered particularly significant in several respects. The visits, which will be organized in various Italian and not only cities, will be prepared through specific lessons in the classroom and conducted by specialists on site. The tests, which consist of exercises for the recognition of specific methodology of intervention, critical readings of specific restoration or in the preparation of restoration projects "in the manner of ...", will allow students and professors to take stock of progress their preparation.
