67099 - Professional Activities

Academic Year 2015/2016

  • Moduli: Daniele Dallacasa (Modulo 1) Marcella Brusa (Modulo 2)
  • Teaching Mode: In-person learning (entirely or partially) (Modulo 1); In-person learning (entirely or partially) (Modulo 2)
  • Campus: Bologna
  • Corso: First cycle degree programme (L) in Astronomy (cod. 8004)

Learning outcomes

At the end of the course, each student will be familiar with various packages (graphics, type-writing, maths, optical benchworks) with wide diffusion, beyond the astronomical community. He will make use of skills acquired in earlier stages of her/his learning (e.g. statistical analysis). She/he will be able to easily generate diagrams and multimedia presentations allowing an efficient illustration of the science cases, both on outreach and on professional levels.

Course contents

The activities are organized into 3 sessions:
1. Celestial coordinates conversion, search for and critical evaluation of info in the NED (NASA Extragalactic object Database). Selection of a literature work and organization of a presentation, useful in the perspective of the laurea session work.
2. Production of a color index  - magnitude diagram for a star globular cluster. Evaluation of the turn-off point and comparison with an isochrone. Measure of the distance modulus. Production of a short LaTeX report.
3. Study of optical spectra taken at the Telescopio Nazionale Galeleo. Measurement of the redshift and evaluation of its uncertainties from spectral lines. Determination of the mean redshift and of the velocity dispersion of the cluster galaxies by means of a basic use of the NOAO/IRAF package. Evaluation of the virial mass of the cluster of galaxies and its uncertainties. Production of a LaTeX report.

Readings/Bibliography

On line manuals of various packages;
Allen's Astrophysical Quantities (A.N. Cox editor) AIP press, Springer

Teaching methods

Short introductory lectures and then individual lab activities. Discussion of the main points during the work.

Assessment methods

The presentation of the first activity and and the two written reports for the remaining tests will constitute the evaluation work carried out.

Teaching tools

Activities will take place in the Informatics Lab, where various packages will be used (a browser, SuperMongo, LaTeX, OpenOffice, IRAF, etc.)
