30472 - Iconography and Iconology (LM)

Learning outcomes

At the end of the class, the student will acquire a good knowledge of the researches of Warburg and of Warburg's heritage, and will be aware of the outlines of iconographical/iconological approach. The student will consciously study the meaning of art works, and comprehend the relevance of images for the history of culture.

Course contents

The program will be divided in two sections.  
The General Program will concern an introduction to iconography and iconology and to the story and the interpretation of sacred and profane images (mythological, historical...).

Teaching methods

The course will consist of lectures (enriched by Power Point displays) and guided visits, if compatibles with the newly imposed class schedule .

Assessment methods

Assessment will be by final oral tests. The student will discuss about works of art and issues dealt with in the class, and about the books assigned in the program. Sometimes, attendant students, if interested to do it, will be allowed to write a paper on a specific topic.
