Learning outcomes

Major objectives of the course include:

  • Understanding the economic development of developing countries in Asia, Africa, Latin America, and Eastern and transition countries;
  • Ability to analyze the economic problems of developing nations including slow growth, stagnation, high poverty rates, high income inequality, and chronic external crises;

  • Discussing strategies to accelerate growth, attain sustainable development, decrease external imbalances and reduce poverty and income inequality.

Course contents

This is an introductory course in development economics.

1. The economics of development. The concept of development and the various theories of development.
2. Historical economic development. World-wide economic development in the long period and modern capitalistic development.
3. Theories of economic development and growth.
4. Contemporary economic development: colonialism, decolonization, international development, globalization.
4. International organizations and development aid.

Teaching methods

Lectures in class and debates with students.

Assessment methods

Written test (4 to 6 essay-questions on the course topics to develop in about 2 hours).
