A guide to activities carried out abroad (in Italian) [.pdf] has been prepared for students and staff of the University of Bologna who, for study, research or work reasons, spend a period of time abroad.
Vaccinations for University students and staff about to go abroad for study, research or work reasons
NOTE: the following information is not about the risks of SARS-CoV-2.
For COVID vaccines only refer to the National/Regional vaccination plan or your General Practitioner. For general information on non-COVID vaccinations required by EU or non-EU countries, contact the CUP Point calling the freephone number 800 88 48 88 to book an appointment.
The University of Bologna and the Bologna Local Health Authority (USL) have signed an agreement whereby all University students and staff about to go abroad for study, research or work reasons can visit a local Public Health Surgery, on a priority basis, for advice and any necessary vaccinations.
Requests for appointments must be received by the Occupational Health Centre at least 2 months prior to departure.
It is necessary to:
- complete the relevant form [.docx 83 KB] indicating:
- destination country and reason for travel;
- departure and return dates (approximate);
- University structure to which affiliated;
- personal identification details;
- attach the vaccination certificate or copy of the vaccination records of the persons concerned;
- send everything to the competent doctors at the University Occupational Health Centre: mariaregina.lotorto@unibo.it; cristiana.fiorentini@unibo.it; massimo.naldi@unibo.it; alessandro.risi@unibo.it.
A Centre doctor will sort the requests and consider the need to take blood samples in order to check for anti-bodies and existing protection.
Vaccinations and/or blood tests may be needed:
- for the prevention of “professional” risks (e.g. in the case of field work by veterinary and medical doctors, archaeologists, biologists etc.). In this case, the cost of the vaccinations and any tests may be borne by the University Occupational Health Centre;
- for public health and hygiene reasons, as specified by the destination country (e.g. the USA and the UK require meningococcal vaccinations). In this case, requests for blood tests must be made personally by the travellers concerned, or their GPs, and booked (some are free) via CUP - the central booking service - or carried out privately. Necessary vaccinations can be booked by the Occupational Health Centre doctor, on a priority basis, using the above procedure.
The cost of the vaccinations must be borne by the persons concerned, but may be reimbursed from project or University funds, if applicable.
In both cases, the competent doctors can provide guidance and information.
On-line vocational training course (MOOC) "Personal risk reduction in insecure contexts"
Additionally, the free "Personal risk reduction in insecure contexts" course, delivered in English, is open to everyone and available on the UniBOOK – UniBo Open Knowledge platform. The objective of the course is to enhance awareness of the context in which mobility is carried out, preparing students appropriately for their study exchange or internship. The course focuses on promoting safe conduct and suitable health precautions, not only prior to departure but also during and after the journey.
