Abstract
The project investigates, from a historical perspective, how structural interventions such as land reclamation have influenced local economic development. The Fascist period is of particular interest given the highly ideological and propagandistic use of these agricultural policies. The core hypothesis is that land reclamation led to an increase in agricultural productivity, but that the effects of these policies on growth and sectoral specialization also depended on structural factors, including the degree of market access in the reclaimed areas. The project also analyzes, including through the use of instrumental variables, how infrastructural state capacity—understood as the ease of access for Italian municipalities to major road networks—influenced the spread of Fascist violence. Finally, it develops a systematic study of how contemporary media, especially newspapers, reacted in terms of sentiment and narrative to episodes of Fascist violence.
