Coping with environment: Economy, Ecology, and Sustainability in Early Modern northern Italy (1500-1800)

PRIN 2022 Azzolini

Abstract

The current ecological crisis suggests that understanding the relationship between economic activities and the emergence of sustainability problems is of essential, although very little systematic historical research has been conducted on this topic for the preindustrial period. The project investigates the period 1500-1800 with the goal of breaking some consolidated representations. Its objectives include: (1) Opening new ways to investigate the relationship between economy and sustainability; (2) Understanding the relationship between the economic, demographic, and political conjunctures—both negative (famines, pandemics, wars) and positive (economic and demographic growth, political stability)—and the management of natural resources; (3) Extending the possible variables that could contribute to the emergence of sustainability problems; (4) Reassessing the role of technology and hydraulics in early modern land-management. Outcomes include participation to conferences and the production of peer-reviewed articles.
