Conoscenze e abilità da conseguire

The course aims at providing students with the basis of the 19th and 20th century political history in European and non-European countries, with particular reference to the political-institutional systems. At the end of the course, the student should know the main processes of political-institutional and socio-economic transformation occurring in Europe and outside Europe from the end of 800 to the end of the Cold War. In particular, students will be introduced to the historical reconstruction of the European integration process, starting from the fundamental questions on the birth and development of the European Communities, up to the transformation introduced by Maastricht.

Contenuti

 

This course is part of the BAES program (UnaEuropa) and is not open to Erasmus (or other) students.

It introduces students to the analysis of XX century history from 1914 to 1991, starting from First World War to the end of the USSR. The course provides a compared analysis of the main historical events which concerned Italy, France, Germany, Great Britain and Russia in addition to the most relevant extra-European facts.

The first part will focus on political transformation in Europe between First and Second World War (interwar period and the totalitarian political systems during the Twenties and Thirties). The second part will deal with Second post-war period, with particular attention on Cold War, until the fall of the Berlin Wall and the transformation in European political systems in a globalized world.

Modalità di verifica e valutazione dell'apprendimento

Two short written examinations at the half and the end of the semester.

There will be one oral examination for those who fail to reach the average grade of 18\30 by the written examinations.

Grading policy

The final overall grade will be in the range 18-30:

- 30 cum laude (outstanding, sure grasp of all the material and many interesting insights)

- 28-30 (excellent, sure grasp of all the material and some interesting insights)

- 26-27 (very good, competent grasp of all the material)

- 24-25 (good, competent grasp of some the material)

- 21-23 (satisfactory, partial grasp of the material)

- 18-20 (pass, barely sufficient grasp of the material)

- 17 or below (fail, insufficient grasp of the material)
