Conoscenze e abilità da conseguire

The course aims at providing students with an up-to-date understanding of the main aspects and trends of tourism with an emphasis on the social and economic dimensions. The distinguishing feature of the course is the long-run perspective in analysing phenomena. At the end of course, students will be able to: (a) understand the main concepts used to explain the historical development of tourism in the global economy and the factors influencing its growth; (b) recognize the ethical, social and cultural issues concerning tourism development; (c) select and apply the appropriate tools and methods to analyse historical facts; (d) identify and analyse historical developments relevant to a deeper understanding of current issues; (e) discuss and communicate topics in a clear and competent manner.

Contenuti

The course is organized in two parts. The first module (prof. Bagnaresi) develops an international and comparative perspective about historical touristic outputs by discussing the following topics:

  • The industrial revolution and the new types of enterprise
  • The consumption revolution
  • Elitist tourism: structures and consumption
  • Elitist tourism: places and approaches
  • Mass tourism: structures and consumption
  • Mass tourism: places an approaches
  • Some outputs of post-modern tourism

The second module (prof. Silvagni) analyses world tourism development in parallel with the social and economic development of the XIX and XX centuries up to the current trends and prospects:

  • Tourism in a globalized world: economic development and the three waves of globalization.
  • The dissolution of the Soviet Union. Tourism in a planned economy.
  • China in a globalized world. Tourism development in Asia.
  • Development of tourism in the United States of America.
  • Strengths and weaknesses of tourism in Africa.
  • The evolution of tourism in Italy.
  • The environmental, economic, and social sustainability of tourism.

Modalità di verifica e valutazione dell'apprendimento

The exam is a written test (4 open questions, 2 on each module), covering the topics of the lectures.

The mark for the written text is out of 30 points and the minimum required to pass the exam is 18/30.

It is not possible to consult books, personal notes or use electronic devices during the exam. Registration for the exam is compulsory, and students have to register through AlmaEsami [https://almaesami.unibo.it/almaesami/welcome.htm] according to the general rules of the School of Economics, Management and Statistics.

Grade rejection

Students can reject the grade obtained at the exam once. To this end, the student must email a request to the instructor within the date set for registration. The instructor will confirm reception of the request within the same date.
