Learning outcomes

The students will be required to learn and master the basic theoretical tools of the literature studying institutions change in political economics and to learn how the theoretical predictions can be tested empirically.

At the end of the course the students are expected to be able to understand the theories and the empirical results published in top journals of economics and political science. 

Course contents

- Stylized Facts and Macro-Theories of Long Run Comparative Development

- Theories of Democratization and Economic Growth.

- Demographic and Institutional Change.

- Bridging Theoretical Predictions and Empirical Analysis

Readings/Bibliography

The introduction to the economic theories of democratization will be based in part on the text:

"Economic Origins of Dictatorship and Democracy", 2005 by Acemoglu and Robinson, MIT Press chaps. 1-9.

The in dept study of the theories and empirical analysis is based on articles published in english in top journals in economics and political science. The updated list of articles, covering papers published from 2004 to 2015, will be made available at the beginning of the course.

Assessment methods

It can involve different tools: Take-home exams, short essays and the presentation/discussion of one or more articles selected out of a reading list.
