Learning outcomes

Students acquire the basic elements (methodology and contents) of gender and intercultural socio-literary studies; they can apply the acquired knowledge in the field of intercultural communication; they are able to evaluate and apply in that field deontologically correct behaviors; and can independently elaborate further knowledge.

Course contents

This cycle of seminars will focus on digital citizenship, sexual and gender identities from an intersectional perspective. More specifically, the following topics will be addressed: multiple discrimination and intersectionality, LGBTQ+ movements and identities, queer studies, feminisms 2.0, gendered hate speech online, 'inclusion' and digital citizenship, strategies to resist discrimination on the web.

Teaching methods

Classes have a seminar structure, that is, they involve the active participation of students.

Assessment methods

Written paper (min. 2000 and max. 3500 words, not including bibliography) in Italian or English on a chosen topic among those provided by the professor. The evaluation of the paper will merge into the overall grade for the course Intercultural and Gender Studies (Prof. Raffaella Baccolini).

Learning assessment scale:

30-30L (excellent): Excellent, in-depth knowledge of the course content, excellent ability to apply theoretical concepts, excellent exposition, as well as excellent capacity for critical analysis in an intersectional perspective.

27-29 (above average): Accurate and extensive knowledge of content, good ability to apply theoretical concepts, ability for critical analysis, accurate and correct exposition.

24-26 (generally sound): Appropriate content knowledge, fair ability to apply theoretical concepts and to present content.

21-23 (sufficient): Appropriate but not extensive knowledge of content, partial ability to apply theoretical concepts, presentation of content acceptable.

18-20 (minimum): Sufficient but superficial knowledge of content, simple exposition, uncertainties in the application of theoretical concepts.

insuff. / failed: Fragmented and superficial knowledge of content, errors in applying concepts, poor exposition. The exam must be repeated.
