Learning outcomes

The student acquires the knowledge of the standard screening of the screening mammography and to recognize the correctness criteria, the accurate description of a screening program, first level investigations such as enlargement, stereotaxis radiography of the operative piece, tomosynthesis and its use, new equipment and methodologies, acquires particular techniques of conversation with the patient.

Course contents

Presentation and analysis of first level mammography techniques:

- description of the dedicated mammography device in all its components,

- analog and digital detection systems,

- standard projections, technique and radiographic anatomy,

- additional projections and special exams: spots, enlargements, galactography with contrast medium and stereotaxis,

- cytology, histology, roll and sentinel,

- tomosynthesis: technical characteristics and field of use,

- mammography with contrast medium, CESM – Contrast Enhanced Spectral Mammography,

- quality controls in the analog and digital system.

Description of taking care of the patient in the presence of a non-palpable lesion (distortions and / or microcalcifications) and in a palpable lesion, diagnostic pathways of reference from clinical breast screening to age screening.

Presentation of mammographic images realized with the digital system in the various acquisitions, from standard projections to tomosynthesis. Considerations on the advantages of the digital system and on how its features compensate for the high spatial resolution of the analog system.

Fundamental principles of radioprotection applied to the reference methods and general concepts on clinical risk management applied to the patient's technical / diagnostic pathway.

Teaching methods

Interactive frontal lecture and discussion of clinical cases. Vision of mammographic examinations acquired with the analog and digital system, evaluation of specific correctness criteria with evidence of the presence of artifacts.

Assessment methods

Written, with multiple choice questions and open questions. Students who want to review the evaluation obtained with the written test will be able to take an oral test on the subject of the teaching.
