Learning outcomes

At the end of the course students will have acquired the fundamental knowledge to critically evaluate and interpret the results of the more used diagnostic approaches in hepatic, cardiovascular and haemostasis pathologies.

Course contents

Part 1

1) Laboratory testing for the diagnostics of cardiovascular diseases

2) Laboratory testing in the assessment of atherosclerosis risk factors

3) Laboratory testing in evaluating the biocompatibility of implant materials

Part 2

1) Diagnostic approaches for personalized treatments: "precision medicine"

2) Tumor markers and cancer diagnostics: traditional and innovative approaches

3) Diagnostic applications of DNA amplification. Principles and diagnostic use of the following techniques:

a) real time PCR,

b) digital PCR,

c) loop mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP).

Assessment methods

Oral exam.

The final examination aims to assess that the student has acquired the fundamental knowledge of the course, to apply knowledge and to make the required deductive reasoning and logic.

Graduation of the final mark

Insufficient: lacunous preparation. Serious and repeated conceptual errors.

18-19: knowledge of basic concepts without serious gaps. Concepts and language within acceptable levels.

20-24: knowledge of the basic concepts without gaps. Ability to analyze and create connections in a partially autonomous way. Concepts and language in the average.

25-29: good or very good preparation, or even excellent but with inaccuracies that compromise the achievement of full marks. Presentation of concepts in the right succession. Good language.

30-30L: complete, consolidated, excellent preparation without any imprecision. Ability to contextualize and profile topics. Presentation of concepts in the right succession. Very good language.

The final mark of the integrated course Clinical Pathology II will be the average of the marks obtained in the exams of Applied Clinical Pathology, Genetic Clinical Pathology and Techniques of Clinical Pathology 2.
