Academic Year 2020/2021

  • Campus: Bologna
  • Corso: Single cycle degree programme (LMCU) in Primary teacher education (cod. 8540)

Learning outcomes

At the end of the course students should be able to demonstrate that they possess full 'threshold' level of the CEFR level (B1) language knowledge in English. They can understand the key points of familiar topics concerning school, leisure time , personal interests, etc. They can interact in English with ease, without errors and misunderstandings in situations that may occur while traveling in Anglo-Saxon countries. Students will be able to produce simple English text on topics that are familiar or of personal interest and will be able to express experiences and events, projects, hopes and ambitions in English, and to simply explain the reasons for their opinions and desires.

Course contents

English language and culture. A brief revision of English grammar from B1.1 to B2-. Students will still be divided into proficiency groups based on the first year exam result. The text used in class will depend on the level of each group. In general it is the same as the first year.

Teaching methods

Methods and techniques used include: reading and comprehension exercises in small groups, grammar review focused on form individually and in small groups, listening practice with exercises in small groups, classroom presentations of lexical and grammar material, production of short texts, poems, scripts based on the language presented in the book, grammatical-dramatic activity (recitation of original scripts that exemplify grammar and pronunciation problems), songs, role-playing games, videos, collaborative and individual writing on paper and digital platforms like Moodle, Padlet, Edmodo, etc.

Assessment methods

The final test will take place at the end of the workshop in written form: it will be a B2- grammar test based on the materials in the books used with a composition on everyday topics. Continuous assessment during the workshop may be also adopted by some teachers.

There are several sections: on Grammar, Lexicon, Idioms, a Reading comprehension (with 10 True/False questions), a Listening (with a transcription of the audio and 10 gaps to fill) and a Writing (at least 150 words). Ideas of possible Writing topics will be offered during the lessons. The marking system assigns 1 point to each correct item, and zero points for null or wrong answers. There is a total of 180 points, and the pass mark is 108/180 (that is 18/30). The final result registered on AlmaEsami is not in marks but a straight IDONEO/NON IDONEO.

Teaching tools

In addition to the book, students will work with presentations, audio clips, photos, videos from the CD and online book, Moodle, Padlet or similar, their own mobile phones to contribute materials on shared platforms or to ask questions online, OHP, in addition to traditional paper- based tools.
