Learning outcomes

The course has three basic topics. First, an analysis of the evolution of institutions and technologies which have produced the modern enterprise. Second, a discussion of the forms of enterprise which have have been active over time. Third, the financial systems which have supported development. At the end of the course, the student will have a more profound understanding of the pillars of our advanced economic system and of the varieties of solutions capable of making countries competitive.

Course contents

The program is developed around the following issues:

1. Introduction and the role of institutions. Birth of the modern market economy. Industrial revolutions and banking systems.

2. Imitation and the birth of an international economy. The features of the gold standard.

3. Forms of enterprise: the corporation (also the soes)

4. Forms of enterprise: SMEs, cooperatives, non-profit. Creation of value chains.

5. Economic policies and country cases: the anglosaxon world.

6. Economic olicies and country cases: Germany, Italy, Japan

7. The first major crisis (1929) and its devastating impact. The new economic order afte WWII.

8. The golden age and the European Union

9. Globalization, financialization and instability. Neoliberism and the second major crisis (2008)

10. Russia, China and the third major crisis (2020). Conclusions.

Assessment methods

The exam consists of two parts with weights 50-50. An in class written exam with 4 open questions and a 6000 words paper on a topic agreed upon with the teacher.
