Learning outcomes

At the end of the course the student has the ability to know the main types of radioactive decay, to know how to perform simple calculations with the law of radioactive decay, to know how the radiation interacts with the material and its relative danger, to know the role of the factors time and distance, understand the difference between external radiation and contamination, know the general characteristics of the main radiation detectors and personal dosimeters, have a basic notion of the obligations of workers exposed to ionizing radiation, have a basic knowledge of radiation protection procedures in a radiopharmacy laboratory.

Course contents

Background on radiation - Electromagnetic waves - Ionizing radiation - Interactions with matter - Attenuation - Dosimetry - External and internal irradiation - Distribution of ionizations - Radiobiology (biological effects, radiosensitivity, stochastic and non-stochastic damage) - Radiation protection (legislative sources, principles, exposure limits, work areas, classification of workers, pregnancy)

Assessment methods

The verification takes place through a final written exam aimed at ascertaining the knowledge and skills acquired. The test includes a series of multiple choice questions, not less than 12, diversified for each topic of the program and periodically updated.

The mark reported in the single course module is averaged (weighted average by number of ECTS) with the partial marks obtained in the other modules of the integrated course.

The outcome of the on-going test of the single module will be valid for the academic year of the test itself.
