Course contents

This class offers students the necessary tools for the analysis of the French language in contemporary media. Using and developing the student's capacity to understand and organize information, the main objective will be to distinguish reliable pieces of information from elements of rhetoric.

The class will analyse language in different domains (such as politics, advertisement, journalism, literature...) through various media (television, radio, web, press). We will work on identifying linguistic elements and reflect on their intended purpose.

After a first phase focusing on comprehension, the class will lead to a phase of production by the students, upcoming linguistic experts soon to be on the work market: reports, articles, press reviews, adverts, debates, etc.

Readings/Bibliography

A list of texts and documents will be available for students at the beginning of the class.

Teaching methods

After studying and reviewing the state of the French language in various domains, the class will offer students the opportunity to look at pratical case studies in contemporary media. They will have to reflect both individually and as a group on linguistic strategies used by the authors.

In a second step, students will move on to a production phase, both written and spoken, using what they learned during the first phase of the class.

Assessment methods

The evaluation of this class will have two distinct parts, with a written exam and an oral exam. The conditions and criteria will be explained at the beginning of the class.

Teaching tools

All texts and documents will be available for students on the class's Moodle page.
