Learning outcomes

After completing the course the student learns the necessary knowledge to the manual lymphatic drainage practice and he is able to make the basic manualities of it through simulated activities.

Course contents

- The lymphatic circulation:

• lymphatic pathways

• localization of lymph nodes

- From physiology to pathology:

• the Starling balance

• local and diffuse edema

• lymphedema: clinical staging and type of lymphedema (lymphostatic and lymphodinamic)

- Effects of Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD)

- Indications and contraindications of the MLD

- MLD Practice:

• Evaluation and palpation of lymph nodes

• The qualitative and quantitative evaluation of edema:

- differences between lymphedema and edema of vascular origin

- measurement techniques of limbs lymphedematosis

• General information on the practice of MLD

• The manualities of the MLD

• The treatment of patients with post-mastectomy lymphedema
