Learning outcomes

At the end of the course, the student will have mastered the main morphosyntactic structures of the Bulgarian language as well as its cultural foundations, in order to manage intercultural communication; he/she will be able to understand and produce written and oral texts of medium complexity (approximately corresponding to Level B1).

Course contents

Communication contents

Various cultural activities – opera, cinema, theatre, art gallery, etc.

Knowledge of cultural heritage (Bulgarian and foreign). Bulgarian holidays.

Hobbies, family relationships, services, firms, business.

Writing a formal and informal letter. Personal diary.

Reflection on communicative structure.

Reading and reflection on an uncomplicated literary text.

Grammatical contents

Fundamentals of the Bulgarian verb system.

Active and passive voice.

Past indefinite (resultative) tense of reflexive verbs.

Imperfect tense. Imperfect forms of perfective and imperfective verbs.

Present active participle.

The Bulgarian gerund (transgressive participle: деепричастие).

Formation of nouns for persons as agents.

Past perfect tense (pluperfect).

Formation of abstract nouns.

The future-in-the-past tense.

Past passive participle.

Syntax:

Word order of short forms of personal pronouns used with the indefinite past tense of reflexive verbs.

Transformation of direct speech with past perfect forms into indirect speech.

Comparison of the uses of the past perfect and the indefinite past.

Comparison of the uses of the past perfect and the imperfect.

Compound sentences with relative clauses.

Temporal subordinate clauses.

Coordination of anterior and posterior acts in time.

Teaching methods

Lectures; exercises and audio and video materials; online materials.

Assessment methods

A final exam consists of a written test (vocabulary and grammar test) and an oral test (conversation on the topics covered in class and exercises). The exam score accounts for 70% of the final grade. 30% of the grade is based on students’ attendance and active participation in the exercises.
