Learning outcomes
At the end of the course, students will acquire knowledge on the preparation and processing of histological and cytological specimens for light microscopy. Students will acquire an overview on the principles of biopsy specimen preservation, such as physical and chemical fixation; on the principles of light microscopy, and the technologies and instrumentation used in pathological anatomy; on the preparation of histological specimens, such as embedding specimens in paraffin and resin, sectioning, and basic staining for histological examination; on the methods for anatomical and pathological diagnosis: histochemistry and enzymohistochemistry, immunohistochemistry, immunofluorescence, and in situ staining.
Course contents
- Preservation of biopsy specimens: fixation with physical and chemical means.
- Principles of optical microscopy; technologies and instrumentation in pathological anatomy.
- Preparation of histological preparations: embedding specimens in paraffin and resin, sectioning, and basic staining for observation of histological preparations.
- Methods for anatomical-pathological diagnosis: histochemistry, enzymohistochemistry, immunohistochemistry, immunofluorescence, in situ staining.
Readings/Bibliography
Materia presented during the lessons will be available in virtuale.unibo platform.
Teaching methods
Frontal lessons with slide projection using a PC and video projector, and videos on the JOVE platform.
Assessment methods
The final exam for the assessment and of the learning outcomes, will consist of an oral
examination in which two questions will be asked on topics covered in the course. The grade, expressed as 30/30, will consider the clear and coherent presentation of the topic, the accuracy of the content, the appropriateness of the terminology, and the student's critical thinking skills.
The grade will be combined with those obtained in the other two courses of the C.I. for obtaining the final grade.
Students with learning disorders and\or temporary or permanent disabilities: please, contact the office responsible (https://site.unibo.it/studenti-con-disabilita-e-dsa/en/for-students) as soon as possible so that they can propose acceptable adjustments. The request for adaptation must be submitted in advance (15 days before the exam date) to the lecturer, who will assess the appropriateness of the adjustments, considering the teaching objectives.
