Learning outcomes
The purpose of the internship in dental offices is to give students the opportunity to experience one of the professional settings where a dental hygienist may work after graduation. Specifically, the student observes the daily activities of a dental hygienist in a private practice selected among those recognized through an agreement between the Faculty of Medicine and the Medical Association. The Association guarantees the professionalism and reliability of the practice. Through this experience, the student gains insight into the differences between public and private healthcare structures. Additionally, the internship helps the student develop critical thinking skills necessary to evaluate their educational path from a professional perspective.
Course contents
This internship offers a valuable educational opportunity for students to observe and gain a concrete understanding of the organization and daily workflow within a private dental practice, formally affiliated with the Bachelor’s Degree Program in Dental Hygiene. During this experience, the graduating student will shadow a dental hygienist working in a real clinical setting, developing awareness of the clinical and managerial dynamics that characterize private practice. Through active observation and direct interaction, the student will strengthen their critical thinking skills, which are essential for reflecting on their academic journey in a professional context. Additionally, the internship enables students to recognize the differences between public and private healthcare facilities, providing valuable insight for future career choices.
Readings/Bibliography
The list of affiliated dental clinics for the extracurricular internship will be provided at the end of the second year of the program by the Coordinator of Educational Activities of the Degree in Dental Hygiene. Students will be able to select, from the available list, the clinic where they wish to carry out their internship.
