Course contents

THE TWENTIETH CENTURY THEATRE BETWEEN RITUAL AND PERFORMANCE

The advent of directing in the late Nineteenth and early Twentieth century change profoundly the way we think and do theater. Among the many and often contradictory components of the Twentieth century theater in the name of directing, the course will consider three very important of these: 1) the so-called re-theatralisation, with the aim of refocusing on the play and on its constituent and specific elements (scene , actor, relation with the audience etc..); 2) the interest towards the origins, with the purpose of bringing the show to a communitary and ritual dimension, restoring its forcefulness; 3) the exotic charm of the non-Western theaters (Asians, especially), taken as alternative models to the dominant Western ones. In the second half of the twentieth century, the pressures of overcoming the role of directing are found in large part in the dialectical play between theatrical anthropology and the proposals of an anthropological theater .
