Learning outcomes

At the end of the course, the student will have acquired the knowledge on the main gender differences regarding the biological and pathophysiological mechanisms of the main valvulopathies, including the ability to apply diagnostic methods for diagnosis and for the choice of medical, surgical and interventional therapeutic strategies.

Course contents

[1] Aortic valve diseases: Main gender differences on classification, definition, etiology, pathophysiology, symptoms, natural history, and prognosis. Medical therapy: prevention of complications, optimization of hemodynamics. Invasive treatment: indications for interventional therapy, indications for surgical therapy. Medical management after invasive treatment.

(2) Mitral valve diseases: Main gender differences on classification, definition, etiology, pathophysiology, symptoms, natural history, and prognosis. Medical therapy: prevention of complications, optimization of hemodynamics. Invasive treatment: indications for interventional therapy, indications for surgical therapy. Medical management after invasive treatment.

(3) Tricuspid and pulmonary valve diseases: Etiology, clinical and instrumental recognition, therapy in relation to the patient's gender.

(4) Management of valvulopathies and biological and mechanical valve prostheses in pregnancy.
