Learning outcomes

At the end of the course, the student has acquired the ability to understand and problematize the functioning of the contemporary world in a spatial key through the concepts, narratives and models with which geography constructs and organizes knowledge on a local and global scale of the Earth.

Course contents

Starting from main geographical models, such as map, globe, space and place, the course introduces a geography of communication.

From such perspectives the contents of the lessons will be strictly correlated to the the way of communicating, representing and producing modern and contemporary geographies.

Students have to study 2 books:

- Minca C., (2022) Appunti di Geografia (a cura di), Milano, Wolters Kluwer. only chapeters specified on Virtuale

- Vegetti M., (2017) L'invenzione del glogo. Spazio, potere, comunicazione nell'epoca dell'aria, Torino, Einaudi.

Teaching methods

Course will be taught through a mixture of formal lectures and discussion classes. Its aim will be to facilitate interaction between the lecturer and students and to stimulate debate among students.

Assessment methods

The exam consists of a written examination on the texts indicated in the bibliography.

The final evaluation will be based on analytical and critical knowledge of syllabus and communicative ability. In these respect students will be evaluated on the ability to think critically about the topics developed during the lessons and the use of a correct terminology.
