General Information on research assignments
Who can hold a research assignment
Research assignment holders carry out continuous collaboration activities. Assignment contracts concern research support activities, and their validity depends on the effective performance of these activities. Research assignments holders work independently, under the supervision of a scientific supervisor (tutor) appointed by the hosting structure.
Research assignments have a minimum duration of one year and a maximum duration— including renewals and extensions—of three years.
Eligibility
Applicants to selection calls or calls for expressions of interest for research assignments must have a curriculum suitable for research support activities and hold a Master’s degree or a combined Bachelor's and Master's degree, obtained no more than six years prior to application.
Non-eligibility
Permanent staff of the institutions referred to in Article 22, paragraph 1, of Law 240/2010, and those who have already held fixed-term researcher contracts pursuant to Article 24 of Law 240/2010 (RTT, Rtd A and Rtd B), are not eligible to apply.
Application process
Research assignments are generally awarded through a public selection process. In this case, candidates are assessed on the basis of their qualifications, publications, and, if applicable, an interview.
In cases where positions are funded by external resources obtained through competitive calls, assignments may instead be awarded following the publication of a call for expressions of interest, with applications evaluated by the project’s scientific supervisor.
Compensation
The minimum allowance is set by Ministerial Decree No. 592 of 6 August 2025.
The amount for each position is specified in the relevant selection call and in the assignment contract.
Training and professional development
Research assignment holders must also complete mandatory training on occupational health and safety and on personal data protection.
