Generative Artificial Intelligence

The University sees artificial intelligence as an opportunity to encourage new teaching approaches and to improve research and administrative-management activities, provided that quality, ethics, academic integrity, protection of the individual and the environment are respected.

The possibilities for applying generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) in the university sector are broad and cross-cutting. GenAI can strengthen learning processes, improve accessibility and the personalisation of teaching programmes, broaden research opportunities – including in collaboration with society and businesses – and support administrative, management and communication activities. At the same time, its use raises significant issues in terms of ethics, data quality and privacy that require careful consideration and the definition of a well-defined guideline by the University.

The University of Bologna has chosen to adopt specific policies on Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) to ensure that this technology, with its enormous innovative potential, is used in an ethical and responsible manner that respects academic values. The policies provide the University’s general guidelines on the use of generative artificial intelligence.

The use of generative artificial intelligence is based on the centrality of the individual and the maintenance of meaningful human control. GenAI is a support tool that must strengthen judgement, decision-making and responsibility, without ever replacing them. Its use requires transparency, awareness and accountability.
