Learning outcomes
At the end of the course, students will possess basic knowledge of the numerical techniques used in Geophysics. Particularly, students will be able: - to apply implicit and explicit methods to solve ordinary differential equations and partial differential equations;- to compute the propagation of waves through simple numerical models developed in the MATLAB environment.
Course contents
Discretization methods based on finite-difference schemes. Implicit and explicit methods. Accuracy. Stability analysis. Ordinary differential equations. Partial differential equations. Parabolic and hyperbolic systems. Numerical computation of wave propagation. Application to propagation of long ocean waves.
Readings/Bibliography
Slides and lecture notes.
Teaching methods
Classroom lectures and numerical applications carried out in the laboratory
Assessment methods
The final test consists of an oral examination concerning theory as well as the numerical tests carried out in the laboratory. Specific questions will be posed on the programs solving differential equations developed in the lab.
