82662 - Energy Efficient Building Design and Performance Assessment

Academic Year 2021/2022

  • Teaching Mode: Traditional lectures
  • Campus: Cesena
  • Corso: Single cycle degree programme (LMCU) in Architecture (cod. 0881)

Learning outcomes

This course provides the skills related to the energy efficiency of buildings, the application of renewable energy technologies (solar, geothermal, ...) integrated in the building and knowledge of systems and their performances in terms of energy efficiency. The student will be able to develop sufficient autonomy in his/her design choices concerning the building energy efficiency. In the design process, congruence between design choices, technological systems and solutions aimed at defining high performance integrated solutions is to be clear.

Course contents

The Sustainable Architecture Design Studio [16 CFU – 192 hours] embeds the following teaching modules:

- Sustainable Design Technologies I [2+2 CFU – 24+24 hours]

- Sustainable Design Technologies II [4 CFU – 48 hours]

- Energy performance evaluation [4 CFU – 48 hours]

- Sustainable Design [2 CFU – 24 hours]

- Energy Savings Design [2 CFU – 24 hours]

The core contents of the studio are addressed to energy efficient and sustainable architecture, aiming to control the process as whole in relation with boundary conditions and complex contexts

The laboratory course is divide in 5 work-in-progress steps: general requirements; Environmental; Comfort level and building internal distribution of activity; Preliminary Design: technical solutions, energy performance of buildings evaluating and plant scheme; Definitive Design: verify energy performance of buildings evaluating and plant scheme
EEBDPA Course contents:
Buildings, energy and environment related to energy behaviour
International European, National and Emilia-Romagna Region standards, law and ruels about building energy minimum requirements
Energy Behaviour and Energy Design: Energy Performance of Buildings (EPB): calculation procedure, transmittance, Primary energy, plant scheme and typologies.
Virtual Modelling: building energy performance simulation, thermal comfort simulation, computer fluid dynamics, thermos-tecnical software assessment, energy labelling

Teaching methods

Lesson ex-cathedra and meeting on design process and building simulation.
Assessment methods
Final project-design oral presentation and discussion

Assessment methods

The exam embeds the assessment of the contents of all the modules and teaching activities included in the design studio and consists in a unique evaluation.

Seminars and reviews are envisaged in order to assess the progress of the projects. Theretical background and references are assessed during the courses according to technological choices. The projects are the results of a progressive development and the final examination is based on a presentation of the finidings and theoretical references as well as on the discussion of drawings and document produced.
