Learning outcomes
By the end of the course, the student has acquired deep knowledge on the principal diagnostic procedures for the etiological diagnosis of infectious diseases and has developed capacities for the critical evaluation and interpretation of the laboratory results.
Course contents
- Clinical Microbiology Laboratory: principle of microbiological diagnosis and clinical laboratory automation
- Microbiology of upper and lower respiratory tract infections
- Microbiology of the gastro-enteric tract infections
- Microbiology of the urinary tract infections and of sexually transmitted infections
- Pyogenic, fungal and parasitic infections of skin, bone and joints
- Microbiology of cardiovascular infections, and significance of blood cultures
- Microbiology of the central nervous system infections
- Zoonoses and arthropod-borne infections
- Infections during pregnancy: diagnosis of maternal, fetal and newborn infections
- Diagnostic aspects of the infections of the immunocompromised patient

Assessment methods
The examination will evaluate whether the students have mastered the above listed skills and have reached the teaching objectives.
The final evaluation of the Integrated Course of Laboratory Medicine will consist of an oral examination basing on specific questions about Clinical Microbiology, Clinical Pathology and Clinical Biochemistry Programs.
