Learning outcomes

The course aims to give students n in-depth understanding of global events and ofthe causes and consequences of globalisation in a variety of political and social domains. At the end of the course, students will be able to discuss and learn about:the most pressing problems in the global political economy (inequalities, poverty, migration);the major political and societal forces at work in the world system; the actions of governments and other decision-makers within world politics; how the distribution of economic resources is influencing both politics and society; the prospects for global governance.

Course contents

One of the major goals of this seminar is to encourage students to be critically minded citizens, to think through and analyze the moral dilemmas that make up the body of politics and law in modern democracies.  

Readings/Bibliography

Readings will consist mainly of real world examples, and court cases illustrating important dilemmas that all democracies face: capital punishment, same sex marriage, etc. A full list will be posted on virtuale. All students should read and prepare the initial text:

Teaching methods

A weekly, extended seminar, structured around: introduction to the week's ideas, discussion, film screening, debate. 

Assessment methods

Final exam.

Teaching tools

Multimedia — texts, speeches, videos will all be used to provoke thought. Participation is important and attendance required.
