Learning outcomes
Basic notions for understanding the functioning of natural and forest ecosystems. Tools for the analysis of forest stands in its different aspects.
Operational tools for:
- management of forest resources at different scales;
- planning and achievement of interventions for environmental reclamation;
- planning and achievement of forestation and reforestation.Course contents
Forest biology: tree growth and its interactions with environment, reproduction, physiological reactions to cutting and pruning. Forest ecology: populations, communities and ecosystems.
Relationships between forest and environment: local and general effects. Humus and forest soils. Analisys of forest stands. Forest functions.
National and regional woods and forests: definitions, characteristics of forest species and of their communities. Anthropic influence on forests: sylvicultural techniques and their effects on forest stands, introduction to logging methods. Management of forest resources, interactions of sylviculture, wildlife and landscape conservation. Multi-purpose forestry management. Forest degradation and recovery. Engineering properties of vegetation. Ecological principles for vegetation establishment and maintenance. Reclamation, revegetation and reforestation techniques.Readings/Bibliography
