Learning outcomes

Upon completion of the course, students will have acquired the grammatical elements of the German language, as well as skills in reading, writing, and speaking, reaching a level no lower than A2—ideally equivalent to B1 on the CEFR. Upon completion of the module, students will be familiar with the fundamental elements of the German language; they will be able to understand and produce written texts and spoken discourse, expressing themselves with relative fluency and spontaneity.

Course contents

The course aims to develop the four language skills: listening, reading, writing, and speaking.

The lessons will focus on helping students acquire a solid command of both active and passive morphosyntactic and lexical structures in oral and written communication in standard varieties of German. The course will include exercises to assess phonetic skills, with particular attention to prosody, as well as a review and consolidation of morphosyntax, in addition to comprehension and production exercises involving various types of oral and written texts, and summarization exercises.  As part of these activities, Artificial Intelligence tools will also be used to support the learning of German as a second language, to facilitate language practice, the writing and revision of texts, and the development of students’ autonomy, while promoting a critical, informed, and ethically responsible use of digital technologies.

 

Readings/Bibliography

The readings will be uploaded on the IOL platform. Students will be required to prepare a different topic each week, based on texts assigned by the teacher.

Teaching methods

The course will be taught partly (especially at the beginning) through classroom lectures, alternating (later on) with hands-on activities in which students produce assignments to be discussed in class.

The teaching and learning process is dynamic and requires active student participation.

Attendance is mandatory at 70%.

Given the nature of the activities and the teaching methods used, participation in this course requires that all students first complete Modules 1 and 2 of the safety training for study spaces, [https://elearning-sicurezza.unibo.it/], via e-learning.

Assessment methods

The exam is oral in all sessions and will cover the topics discussed during the semester. The final evaluation will assess whether the entire, complex project—as well as the way it was organized and the resources used—enabled the full achievement of the objectives outlined above.

Assessment Criteria
30-30: An excellent performance demonstrating outstanding mastery of the expected knowledge, as well as linguistic proficiency demonstrating complete mastery of the target language.
27–29: An above-average performance, with minor errors or errors that are otherwise offset by a more than sufficient demonstration of the knowledge and skills to be acquired.
24–26: A valid performance, but with some obvious errors indicating only partial mastery of the required knowledge and skills.
21–23: A sufficient performance, but with noticeable limitations in the knowledge and skills to be acquired.
18–20: A performance that meets only the minimum criteria for the knowledge and skills to be acquired.
< 18: Insufficient—basic knowledge has not been acquired; the exam must be retaken.

Teaching tools

The course makes use of new media (e.g., audio and video podcasts), PowerPoint presentations, and artificial intelligence (AI)-based tools to support teaching, learning, and in-depth exploration of the course content. AI may be used, where appropriate, for activities such as the production of instructional materials, the summarization and analysis of texts, the creation of exercises, and study support—always under the supervision of the instructor and in accordance with the principles of transparency, academic integrity, and the responsible use of technology.
All materials used during class and relevant to exam preparation will be available online on the IOL platform.
