C9339 - THE LAW OF INTERNATIONAL ORGANIZATIONS

Learning outcomes

At the end of the course, the student will: - understand the role, structure, and functioning of international organisations within the contemporary international legal order; - be able to critically assess the competences of international organisations, recognising both their centrality and the tensions that shape their action; - be capable of analysing the institutional, normative, and operational dimensions of major international organisations—universal, regional, and sectoral; - understand and interpret the contribution of these organisations in areas such as peace and security, environmental protection, human rights, economic cooperation, and migration management; - comprehend the relationship between international organisations, member States, and non-state actors, as well as the ways in which these organisations produce legal effects and shape behaviour; - have a solid understanding of the immunities of international organisations, including their functions, limitations, and implications for access to justice and accountability; - be able to interpret constituent treaties, institutional practice, and the case law of international courts and monitoring bodies; - be capable of evaluating the geopolitical impact of international organisations and understanding how they contribute to the formation and implementation of international law; - apply an interdisciplinary conceptual framework to assess the functioning and effectiveness of international organisations; - develop well-reasoned legal arguments concerning the role of international organisations within the international community.
