Learning outcomes
The objective of this course is to develop interdisciplinary expertise in battery materials. Students will explore the synthesis, structure, and electrochemical properties of key materials, both established and emerging in the field of research. Special emphasis is placed on nanostructured components for batteries
Course contents
Characterisation and applications of classes of substances that include:
- electrode materials
- electrolytes (salts, solvents, ionic liquids, inorganic solid electrolytes).
Carbon micro- and nanomaterials, organic-inorganic hybrid materials, and transition-metal compounds (oxides, sulfides, carbides, nitrides).
Materials with 0D, 1D, 2D, 3D morphologies and lattice architecture.
Synthesis techniques to produce advanced materials: wet and solid-state chemical syntheses, gas phase methods, hydrothermal and microwave-assisted synthesis methods.
Basic reaction parameters, sustainable solvents for the preparation of modern functional materials for energy storage: batteries and supercapacitors active materials, electrolytes, or tailor-made separators.

Teaching methods
Lectures are supported by PowerPoint presentations and feature literature-based examples, which are analysed and discussed with students, with additional support from the whiteboard.
Assessment methods
A final oral exam (30-40 min) that accounts for 100% of the overall grade.
