Learning outcomes
The course aims to provide practical competencies for the design, implementation, and monitoring of Adapted Physical Activity (APA) programmes for individuals with a wide range of specific needs. Students will develop skills in the application of safe and evidence-based exercise protocols, basic functional assessment, and the adaptation of exercise programmes according to individual functional abilities and health conditions.
The course will also foster the ability to integrate technical, organizational, and communication skills in the planning and management of practical exercise sessions, promoting a person-centred and evidence-informed approach to Adapted Physical Activity.
Course contents
MANDATORY PRACTICAL TECHNICAL ACTIVITIES (MPTAs)
The Mandatory Practical Technical Activities (MPTAs) constitute a fundamental component of the course, providing students with the opportunity to develop practical competencies in the field of Adapted Physical Activity (APA). Through a series of supervised practical sessions, students will apply the theoretical knowledge acquired during the course by directly experiencing specific protocols, methodologies, and assessment tools commonly used in professional practice.
The primary objective is to develop practical and applied skills, with particular emphasis on movement analysis, injury prevention and management, enhancement of motor function in individuals with specific needs, and the role of the exercise professional in health-related settings.
Practical Session 1Falls in Older Adults: Assessment methods and intervention strategies.
Practical Session 2Unstable Surfaces as Training Tools for improving balance and neuromuscular control.
Practical Session 3Gait Analysis: Theoretical foundations and principles of gait assessment.
Practical Session 4The Role of the Exercise and Sport Scientist in Adapted Physical Activity.
Practical Session 5Muscle and Tendon Injuries: Classification, characteristics, and clinical aspects.
Practical Session 6Core Training as an Evidence-Based Intervention for Low Back Pain (LBP).
Practical Session 7Assessment and Management of Upper Limb Disorders.
IMPORTANTBefore participating in the practical activities, all students are required to complete the University's mandatory health and safety training.
Given the nature of the practical activities and the teaching methods adopted, participation is conditional upon successful completion of Modules 1 and 2 of the University of Bologna's Health and Safety Training, delivered in e-learning format:

Readings/Bibliography
Recommended Learning Resources
As these are practice-based activities, there is no mandatory textbook.
The instructor may provide lecture slides and supplementary learning materials, which will be made available during the practical sessions or through the University's online learning platforms. These resources are intended to support students in preparing for and consolidating the practical competencies developed throughout the course.
Teaching methods
Teaching Methods
The advanced practical sessions will take place in the gymnasium, with students working in organized groups. Attendance is mandatory.
During these sessions, students will use specialized equipment and advanced assessment and exercise methodologies to consolidate the technical and practical competencies acquired throughout the course.
The practical sessions are designed to promote experiential and application-based learning, enabling students to develop the operational skills required for the assessment, planning, implementation, and monitoring of Adapted Physical Activity (APA) programmes in a variety of clinical and community settings.
Assessment methods
Assessment Methods
Learning will be assessed through a written test designed to evaluate students' mastery of the topics covered during the Mandatory Practical Technical Activities (MPTAs). The assessment will verify both the acquisition of theoretical knowledge and the development of the practical competencies gained throughout the practical sessions.
In addition, selected topics addressed during the practical activities will be included in the final examination of the Adapted Physical Activity course, allowing for a comprehensive evaluation of the knowledge and professional competencies acquired.
Active participation and mandatory attendance at the practical sessions are essential requirements for eligibility to undertake the assessment activities.
Teaching tools
To promote meaningful and student-centred learning, the course will incorporate active learning methodologies and a competency-based educational approach. These will be complemented by teaching strategies designed to foster students' self-assessment skills and metacognitive awareness, encouraging critical reflection on their own learning process and professional development.
