Learning outcomes

At the end of the seminars, students will acquire competences in interpreting specific topics related to philology, literature and history, or necessary to the creation and improvement of their background.

Course contents

The Traitor's Tale: Reading the Gospel of Judas Twenty Years after its Rediscovery.

Perhaps already known to Irenaeus of Lyons in Greek at the end of the second century CE, rediscovered in a Coptic translation and published after a long series of vicissitudes between 2006 and 2007, the Gospel of Judas still hovers in contemporary imagination between a sensationalist view and its radical, critical re-assessment: proponents and supporters of the first consider it as a historically reliable account of the final hours of Jesus' life, alternative to the canonized Gospels and therefore suppressed and 'silenced' by mainstream Christianity; scholars instead see in this text a relevant, though biased witness to the diversity and conflict within the Jesus movement around the middle of the second century CE. In a first phase, the seminar intends to provide students with the basics of Coptic language and literature (20 hours). The last 10 hours of the seminar will be then devoted to reading in Coptic, translating and analyzing relevant passages from the Gospel of Judas, as well as to re-locating the work within the Christian literary history of the first two centuries (10 hours).

Teaching methods

Lectures and analysis of Coptic texts. Slides and videos will be shown. Students will be given the opportunity to actively participate in and offer their own contribution to the exegetical work on texts.

Assessment methods

The final written test aims to verify the grammatical and linguistic skills acquired during the lessons, and consists of a translation from Coptic of five sentences: two of them already analyzed during the lessons, the other three never read before. The test will be considered passed with the correct translation of at least three sentences.
