Learning outcomes

The course in Chemistry and Introductory Biochemistry aims to provide the foundations for understanding the fundamental laws that govern matter and its transformations, with particular attention to biological phenomena at the atomic and molecular level, in relation to biomedical applications. The course in Chemistry and Introductory Biochemistry will be structured into 8 teaching units: Teaching Unit 1. Atomic structure, the periodic table of elements, and chemical bonding (teaching workload evaluated in credits = 0.5). Teaching Unit 2. States of matter and principles of thermodynamics (teaching workload evaluated in credits = 0.5). Teaching Unit 3. Mixtures and solutions, and the colligative properties of solutions (teaching workload evaluated in credits = 1). Teaching Unit 4. General principles of chemical reactions, chemical kinetics, and chemical equilibrium (teaching workload evaluated in credits = 0.5). Teaching Unit 5. Acids, bases, salts, pH, buffer solutions; oxidation-reduction reactions and electrochemistry (teaching workload evaluated in credits = 1). Teaching Unit 6. Properties of carbon and the reactivity of organic compounds: hydrocarbons, alkyl halides, aromatic hydrocarbons, and their derivatives (teaching workload evaluated in credits = 0.5). Teaching Unit 7. Functional groups and isomerism: alcohols, phenols, ethers, thiols and thioethers; aldehydes and ketones; carboxylic acids and derivatives, amines and amides (teaching workload evaluated in credits = 1). Teaching Unit 8. Amino acids and proteins, carbohydrates, lipids, nucleotides, and polynucleotides (teaching workload evaluated in credits = 1).
