Learning outcomes
On successful completion of the course, students will be able to:
- demonstrate a sound understanding of the fundamental principles, concepts and approaches of pedagogy relevant to physical activity, play and sport;
- independently design, plan and deliver educational programmes in physical activity, play and sport across both school and community settings;
- work effectively with professionals from different disciplinary backgrounds involved in educational and sporting contexts;
- observe, analyse and critically evaluate educational contexts using appropriate pedagogical frameworks;
- integrate pedagogical theory with educational practice in the planning, implementation and evaluation of educational interventions.
Course contents
Readings and discussions centred on books and picturebooks, graphic novels, fiction and non-fiction texts (selected from the SPED Collection of the Campus Library), together with a range of other materials related to the themes of pedagogy, understood as both the theory and practice of education.
Education, conceived as a relational process that is always reciprocal and always political, lies at the heart of the course. Students will be invited to revisit their own educational autobiographies; to read and discuss childhood and adolescence narratives that explore growing up and experiencing relationships, including within the context of sport; to reflect on wellbeing and on relationships with oneself, with others and with the environment; to identify significant voices in the field of transformative pedagogy; and to engage in discussions on topics such as consent, the body, and dialogue in education.
Children's and young adult literature will serve as the primary body of material through which to explore life stories, emotions, responsibility and transformation. These texts will be considered alongside theoretical contributions, with particular emphasis on the pedagogy of the body and narrative pedagogy.
Special attention will be given to language, as well as to the relationship between the sporting gesture and the political, poetic and expressive gesture. Books will also provide the basis for designing embodied, somatic and playful activities, beginning with practices centred on breathing.
The course will also include seminar-based sessions and practical movement experiences.
Readings/Bibliography
To be eligible to sit the examination, students are required to read a minimum of five narrative and/or non-fiction texts selected from the SPED Collection, available at the Rimini Campus Library.
Students are expected to relate these readings critically to the theoretical texts listed below. The latter should be studied in order to develop familiarity with their key terminology, core concepts and methodological frameworks.

Teaching methods
The course is based on readings, critical discussion, reflection and group work. It adopts a dialogic approach and includes practical workshop activities.
Assessment methods
Assessment will take the form of an oral examination based on the course content and the readings discussed during the course.
Students may choose to take the examination in groups, subject to prior agreement with the course lecturer.
Students with specific learning difficulties (SpLDs) or temporary or permanent disabilities are strongly advised to contact the relevant University office well in advance:
https://site.unibo.it/studenti-con-disabilita-e-dsa/it
The office will be responsible for proposing any appropriate reasonable adjustments for the students concerned. Such adjustments must, however, be submitted to the module convenor for approval at least 15 days in advance. The module convenor will assess their suitability, taking into account the intended learning outcomes of the module.
With regard to the assessment, the use of artificial intelligence (AI) is prohibited. Any use of AI constitutes a breach of academic integrity.
Teaching tools
The SPED bibliographic collection at the Rimini Campus Library represents a fundamental teaching and learning resource.
A selection of texts from the collection will be read, presented and discussed in class. The course will also include the use of video resources as part of the learning activities.
